Tania Sachdev (Born on August 20, 1986 in Delhi) is an Indian chess player, Tania holds the FIDE titles of International Master (IM) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM). She is also a chess presenter and commentator.
A Viswanathan Anand fan, Tania became the eighth Indian Woman Grandmaster. Tania won her first international title when she was just eight. She has already won the World and Asian junior titles. In 2008 she topped the Asian Chess Championship with 6.5 points out of nine rounds.
Tania was also listed in the Limca Book of Records as a world record holder for being the youngest to win a Gold Medal in an international event in the world. She became a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) at the age of 18. She made her final norm by drawing the 10th and penultimate round with Hungary’s Lajos Seres. Tania became the eighth Indian Woman Grandmaster joining the list of S Vijayalakshmi, Koneru Humpy, Aarthie Ramaswamy, S Meenakshi, D Harika, Nisha Mohota and Swati Ghate.
Tania studied English Literature with Political Science and Psychology at the Delhi University and graduated in 2008. She was Asian U14, Junior and Senior Champion, and won the national Indian Women Championship in 2006 and 2007, also being a runner up in 2008. She is also holding bronze medal from the World U12 Championship. She was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2009.
Tania Sachdev won the individual bronze medal for board 3 at the 2012 Women's Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, four team silver medals (in 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014) and four individual ones (three silver and one bronze) at the Women's Asian Team Championship. In 2016, Sachdev won the best woman's prize at the Reykjavik Open and won the Commonwealth women's champion title in Kalutara.
Tania married Delhi-based architect Viraj Kataria in November 2014. She is a trained Indian classical dancer. Her hobbies are shopping and reading.
